The tappet transmits the power of the camshaft to the high-pressure pump and should be checked or replaced regularly. A defective cup tappet can damage the driving camshaft or the high-pressure pump. In the worst case even both. A defect is not always announced, so a visual inspection and timely replacement are worthwhile.

ORIGINAL INA FUEL PUMP CAM FOLLOWER TAPPET WITH SEAL AUDI A3 A4 TT 2.0 FSI TFSI
VW has encountered a problem with the FSI camshaft and cam follower that could lead to damage to your engine's cylinder head. This is number 1 problem with those engines.
If it becomes worn to the point of breaking it can cause permanent damage to the camshaft, fuel pump, or both. It could also send metal particles into your cylinder head which can cause damage to moving parts. Without replacement, it is common for followers to have holes worn through them.
Replacing this follower as a form of preventative maintenance can save you from spending even more money and time replacing your fuel pump or camshaft from damage caused by a worn follower.
Some people change it every service, however good practice checking or replacing your cam follower:
every 7,5-15 Ks on highly modified cars
every 30-40 Ks on stock cars.
Q: When should I replace my cam follower?
A: When you don’t have car service history and you don’t know when was it replaced, when removed cam follower doesn’t have equal black protective anti-wear coverage on it or non at all on cheap Chinese parts.
Q: When is too late to check my cam follower?
A: 100 Ks is way too late, many will have a lot of wear or hole through it. Consequences are including metal filing, damaged HPFP, damaged lobes on intake cam shaft etc. In some cases metal piece from the bottom of cam follower can go between timing chain and sprocket and timing chain will brake if so it can lead to hole in timing cover case and more.
